Recently the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction gave guidance that our application Compass be used to capture a student’s Four-Year Rolling Plan for meeting Choice Ready requirements. In Compass, students create a profile that includes the classes they are taking, have taken, or are going to take during their high school career, the activities they are in, hobbies they enjoy, and the Myers Briggs 16 Personalities assessment. These are used to give the student insight into their skills and match them to employers, careers, college programs, and work-based learning opportunities. The benefits to using Compass as the Four-Year Rolling Plan is that both Choice Ready requirements can be met and the student can use their profile to help them plan for the future.
In addition to benefiting the student, each school’s course list is loaded into Compass, with classes mapped to the state MIS03 codes. As more and more students create profiles, the state can start to understand trends in classes that students are planning to take, what course demand might look like in future years, and what skills and career aspirations future graduating classes will have in specific communities, regions, and across the state.
Below are some useful links that will help you as an educator understand the vision of the Compass profile as the Four-Year Rolling Plan, instructions on how to manage a school’s course list, guidance for students on how to fill out their profiles, and training resources. Most of this information can be found in the RUReady.ND.gov Professional Center (go to Resources>>Compass), on our YouTube channel, and in training materials from the North Dakota Department of Career & Technical Education.
Stay tuned for more functionality to help you manage your students’ profiles and drive Choice Ready reporting, as well as the launch of a course on the ND Education Portal with credit options.
